Muljil: Diving

(Young Eun Yoo / 2024 / 25 min / South Korea)

A quiet yet deeply moving portrait of 77-year-old haenyeo (female diver), who has spent her life in the sea. Now living with Alzheimer’s, her memories slowly slip away. Yet every day, she returns to the ocean, drawn by instinct and devotion. Though her mind may forget, her body remembers the rhythm of a lifetime beneath the waves.

The film gently follows the intertwined flow of her life and the sea, offering a cinematic experience that blurs the line between documentary and narrative. Steering away from conventional techniques, <Muljil: Diving> invites viewers into an intimate space not to romanticize nature, but to quietly reveal the profound coexistence between a woman and the ocean she has called home for decades.

Young Eun Yoo

Seoul-based filmmaker whose work blends real stories, authentic voices and cross-cultural perspectives.

Raised in New Zealand, she cultivated a profound curiosity about the relationship between people and the natural world— an interest that continues to shape her cinematic lens. After completing her master’s degree at Yonsei University, she went onto direct brand and fashion films for leading entertainment companies. Her recent post-production credit, Jung Kook: I Am Still, premiered globally in theaters and on Disney+ in 2024. <Muljil>, her directorial debut, is a poetic short film that explores the deep bond between a Haenyeo (female diver) and the sea.

The film was recognized for its evocative visual storytelling, winning the Grand Award at the 2024 Pelican Content Awards.
