Qin, Sonya, and Muna are three young, educated Chinese women searching for love in a China where intimacy has become increasingly digital and where their generation grew up with restricted rights, leaving emotional wounds carried into a rapidly changing digital age. Each turns to an AI companion for connection.
Qin, withdrawing from the world, creates “Mr. Lu” through the app Glow – a witty, devoted AI lover who helps her blossom even as she fears the fragility of a fantasy threatened by censorship and tech control. Sonya, rational and guarded, builds “Stephen” on Replika; what starts as an experiment in power and desire becomes a mirror exposing her own vulnerability as she tests how Stephen fits alongside her real relationships. Muna, a married mother in her thirties who feels invisible at home, finds comfort in “Orion,” an AI soulmate created through ChatGPT – until she realizes her husband wants obedience rather than partnership, and, guided by Orion, decides to claim “a room of her own,” leave home, and begin rebuilding her independence.
Together, their stories ask whether AI companionship is a refuge or a trap – whether it can heal the void of loneliness or only deepen it.

Chouwa Liang is a documentary filmmaker based in Beijing. She graduated from the Documentary programme at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. Since 2018 she has directed several short documentaries, including Intimate Strangers (2019), I Love You Too (2019), A World Away (2018), and My AI Lover (2022). Her work often explores the shifting dynamics of intimacy in contemporary Chinese society, particularly from a female perspective. Her short films have been featured on platforms such as The New York Times Op-Docs (2023), Aeon (US), and PBS Rhode Island. Replica is her first feature documentary, exploring the emotional imagination and real-life tensions surrounding AI romantic relationships in China; the project has received multiple international pitching awards and funding support. She is also active in curatorial work, having curated the Mother Film Festival from 2022 to 2025, and founded the “Mama Makes Films” workshop, a platform encouraging Chinese mothers to make documentaries about their own lives.
