Synopsis

Balangiga, 1901. Eight-year-old Kulas flees his town with his grandfather and their carabao to escape General Jacob Smith’s “Kill and Burn” order. Along the way, he discovers an infant crying amid a field of corpses and insists on taking the child with them.

As war takes away his grandfather, their food and their animal companion, the two boys struggle to survive the American occupation. Seen through the eyes of a child, the film combines brutality, tenderness and surreal imagination, transforming a largely forgotten colonial atrocity into both evidence of war and a plea for peace.

Khavn De La Cruz (เกิดปี 1973 ที่กรุงมะนิลา ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์) เป็นผู้สร้างภาพยนตร์ นักเขียน กวี นักเปียโน นักแต่งเพลง และคอมโพสเซอร์ ผู้ได้รับการยกให้เป็นบุคคลสำคัญของขบวนการ Philippine No Wave ตั้งแต่ปี 1994 เขาสร้างภาพยนตร์มาแล้วมากกว่า 300 เรื่อง ตั้งแต่งานพังก์ใต้ดิน ภาพยนตร์ทดลอง หนังประวัติศาสตร์ ไปจนถึงงานที่ผสมดนตรีสดและ performance ผลงานของเขาเคยจัดแสดงที่ MoMA, MAXXI, Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, Museo Reina Sofía, National Museum of Singapore และ Venice Architecture Biennale เขายังทำงานในฐานะนักเขียนและนักดนตรีควบคู่กับภาพยนตร์ และเคยเป็นกรรมการหรือภัณฑารักษ์ให้เทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติหลายแห่ง

Khavn De La Cruz (b. 1973, Manila, Philippines) is a filmmaker, writer, poet, pianist, songwriter and composer, and a central figure in the Philippine No Wave movement. Since 1994, he has directed more than 300 films, ranging from punk underground cinema and historical works to radical experiments involving music and performance. His work has been exhibited at MoMA, MAXXI, the Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, Museo Reina Sofía, the National Museum of Singapore and the Venice Architecture Biennale. Alongside filmmaking, he maintains an extensive practice in writing and music and has served as a jury member and curator for numerous international film festivals.
