Synopsis

Pueblo de Agua grows out of a look at the resistance of Colombia’s Indigenous peoples to preserve their traditions, their ways of life and their ancestral relationship with territories they have inhabited for generations.

In the Baudó, this defence takes place amid mounting pressure to extract and exploit everything the jungle can turn into a commodity: timber, gold, coca, fossil fuels, as well as the appropriation of land, mainly for cattle ranching.

Between these two ways of understanding and occupying the territory, a violent dispute unfolds. The presence of armed groups such as the ELN and the AGC cuts through the lives of peasant, Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities, including the recruitment of minors and the displacement of families.

The documentary draws especially close to the Emberá Dobidá people, whose existence is deeply bound to the river, the jungle and the beings that inhabit it. These are communities that, in protecting their territory and their way of life, end up putting their own lives and safety at risk.

Pueblo de Agua is, finally, an approach to that silent resistance: to those who defend a territory not only as a place to live, but as a living space on which their memory, their culture and their future depend.
