In 2020, as pandemic restrictions in China eased, a violinist returns to his hometown to visit his parents and old friends. A sudden accident upends everything that follows, and what should have been a family ceremony can no longer truly be called one.

Shot partly during the lockdown in Shenzhen and in the director’s hometown in Hubei, the film mixes documentary footage with restaged scenes: after the director’s grandmother passes away, her children argue over funeral arrangements while each pursues their own concerns, leaving the grandmother’s body as the silent witness to a strangely indifferent transition. When spring arrives and people begin to celebrate again, the film asks whether any real celebration — or any real ceremony — actually exists in this land.
