In a smog-choked village, a retired professor faces despair when his cow delivers a stillborn calf. Abandoned by his farmhand, he reluctantly turns to a forbidden ritual, crafting a calf doll from the dead newborn despite his wife’s warnings. As they grapple with the tensions between tradition and change, the quiet rhythms of rural life slowly unravel around them.

Ankur Hooda is a 25-year-old self-taught filmmaker, writer, and producer. After spending his formative years in a small village in Haryana, he went on to study Advertising in Mumbai while simultaneously engaging with filmmaking. Through his work, he is primarily interested in exploring humanist themes, spatial identities, and the anthropology of rural communities obscured by rapidly changing regional landscapes. The Calf Doll is his debut feature film, which premiered at CPH:DOX 2026.
