Notes on an Exile

Footage of an encounter with a Brazilian-Palestinian family in the West Bank, filmed in 2018, is revisited after the events of October 7, 2023. What began as a film about the possibilities of coexistence in an occupied land becomes a reflection on colonization, apartheid, genocide, and the recent wave of war imagery produced by the very victims of a massacre that repeats itself across time. Weaving together three timeframes (the intimate present of the 2018 footage, the historical continuum of the Nakba, and the urgency of the war up to the December 2024 ceasefire), the film becomes an essay on the persistence of violence and the refusal to forget.
Combining personal archives, first-person testimony, and images captured from social media, the film explores how Palestinians document and share the realities of their daily lives in the face of disinformation and erasure. It also sheds light on the often-overlooked stories of Brazilian-Palestinians, challenging dominant narratives of migration, resistance, and identity; more a poetic and political act of testimony than a conventional documentary.

Gustavo Castro is a Brazilian director, cinematographer, and editor. For 19 years he has worked as a popular educator and audiovisual creator, producing over 30 documentaries on social, political, environmental, and cultural issues across South America, the Amazon, and the Middle East. His work blends social resistance with poetic imagery and documentary-essay approaches. Notes on an Exile (2025) marks his feature debut as director and cinematographer.
