Synopsis

Inspired by Makamisa, José Rizal’s unfinished third novel, this silent film transforms fragments of Philippine colonial history into a phantasmagoria about the transition from Spanish to American rule. Three figures—the poet Simoun Rizal, the priest Father Agaton Damaso and the American woman Sisa Bracken—wander through a world where madness, religion, desire and revenge converge.

Shot on expired 35mm film, hand-processed, tinted, scratched and toned, the film resurrects the colonial past as a fragmented and haunting nightmare, accompanied by a score by David Toop, Khavn and The Kontra-Kino Orchestra.

Khavn De La Cruz (b. 1973, Manila, Philippines) is a filmmaker, writer, poet, pianist, songwriter and composer, and a major figure in Philippine No Wave and independent cinema. Since 1994, he has directed more than 300 films. His key works include Squatterpunk, Mondomanila, Alipato: The Very Brief Life of an Ember, Balangiga: Howling Wilderness, Happy Lamento and Orphea—the latter two collaborations with Alexander Kluge—and Rizal’s Makamisa: Phantasm of Revenge. Alongside cinema, Khavn maintains an extensive literary and musical practice.
