Is an old Albanian nursery rhyme a wake-up call for revolution, or a lullaby that complies with the regime? Generations of Images searches for traces through Albania’s profound historical transformations (from communist dictatorship to capitalist democracy) using archival footage, forgotten places, and the memories of different generations.
Working with never-before-used material from dictator Enver Hoxha’s private archive alongside newly filmed conversations with former dissidents and young people, the film traces ruptures and continuities left behind by the change of regime. In its essayistic, poetic approach, it examines both “regime images” and “image regimes,” surfacing hidden narratives and showing how deeply Albania’s history is woven into the fabric of its present, and reflecting on the filmmaker’s own role as image-maker and storyteller.

Johannes Gierlinger (b. 1985) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His work engages with memory, remembrance, and perspectives of resistance, examining historical and social traces, transformations, and connections between different eras and systems, and exploring how their structures remain visible in the present. His work has received numerous prizes and grants, including the Birgit Jürgenssen Award, the BMKOES Outstanding Artist Award for Film, the Annual Scholarship for Film (Federal State of Salzburg), and the Diagonale Documentary Short Film Award. His films have screened at festivals and institutions including Visions du Réel Nyon (CH), Belvedere21 (AT), IMPAKT Festival (NL), Werkleitz Centre for Media Art (DE), CPH:DOX (DK), Filmmaker Fest Milano (IT), Museum der Moderne Salzburg (AT), EMAF Osnabrück (DE), Bienal de Artes Mediales de Santiago (CL), Dokufest (KOS), Bergamo Film Meeting (IT), Edinburgh IFF (GB), Antimatter [Media Art] (CA), das weisse haus (AT), rotor Graz (AT), Salzburger Kunstverein (AT), and Diagonale Graz (AT).
