Thai Mother’s Day Spotlight: Mania Akbari, the Defiant Filmmaker

For Thai Mother’s Day, WTD! turns the spotlight on Mania Akbari, one of this year’s jury members, a filmmaker, artist and curator whose deeply personal and uncompromising work moves across documentary, experimental cinema and contemporary art, exploring the body, memory, gender and power.

At WTD! 2026, Jury Program: Mania Akbari presents three films that reveal different dimensions of her cinema, from reclaiming women’s images from film history, to the body as a site of trauma, memory and resistance, and finally to questions of home, family and the past.

And on Sunday, 6 September at 14:50, join us at Century The Movie Plaza (Sukhumvit) for a special Talk with Mania Akbari following A Moon for My Father, a chance to hear directly from one of contemporary cinema’s most defiant voices about film, the body, memory and her creative practice.

Three films, three perspectives, and a rare chance to encounter a filmmaker who has continually challenged who gets to control images, bodies and memory. See you at the cinema.
