In Cambodia, major international breweries are locked in a battle to dominate the country’s rapidly growing beer market – using aggressive marketing, “beer girls,” and the promise of cash prizes and economic opportunity to encourage a poor population to drink more.
The film follows an activist who takes on the beer industry in an uphill fight to introduce a national alcohol law, while also meeting ordinary Cambodians (sellers, singers, and beer girls) who see the beer industry as their possible path to a better life. Ultimately, the film portrays what happens to people’s ethics and morality when alcohol and capitalism are unleashed in a poor, corrupt country with almost no restrictions.

Laurits Nansen has directed and filmed several acclaimed documentaries, mainly for Scandinavian audiences until now; Cambodian Beer Dreams is his first feature-length documentary aimed at an international audience. He holds a university degree in History and Journalism and began his career as an investigative journalist for leading Danish newspapers. Over the past decade he has directed a range of documentaries and co-founded the production company Eight Pictures. His work is known for combining journalistic research with cinematic storytelling. He has received awards from the Association of Investigative Journalists (FUJ) and the EU Commission, and has been nominated for the Cavling Prize, the Danish TV Awards, and the Danish Film Academy’s Robert Award.
