Founded 40 years ago amid pressure to open Korea’s film market to Hollywood, the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) became South Korea’s first national film school. Without interviews or intervention, the film observes the school today. Moving through rigorous critique sessions, lengthy faculty review meetings, administrative meetings, and a fraught roundtable between the school and its animation alumni, it traces the conditions through which creative work takes shape.
What emerges is a portrait of cinema shaped not only by individual talent and passion, but by the systems in which it is taught, evaluated, and produced.

คิม ดงรยอง จบการศึกษาจากสถาบันศิลปะภาพยนตร์แห่งเกาหลี ปัจจุบันเป็นผู้สร้างภาพยนตร์และศิลปินทัศนศิลป์ที่อาศัยอยู่ในกรุงโซล เธอพัฒนาภาพยนตร์เกี่ยวกับค่ายทหารอเมริกันในเกาหลีใต้ขึ้นจากความร่วมมืออย่างใกล้ชิดกับผู้หญิงที่อาศัยและทำงานอยู่ที่นั่น โดยแต่ละผลงานมีรูปแบบเฉพาะตัวผ่านการสังเกต การแทรกแซง การจำลองเหตุการณ์ และเรื่องแต่ง ภาพยนตร์เรื่องยาวเรื่องแรกของเธอ American Alley (2008) ได้รับรางวัล Ogawa Shinsuke จากเทศกาลภาพยนตร์สารคดีนานาชาติ Yamagata ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Tour of Duty (2013) ได้ฉายในเทศกาล Documentary Fortnight ของ MoMA, Hot Docs, Ji.hlava IDFF และ Yamagata ซึ่งได้รับรางวัลพิเศษในการประกวดระดับนานาชาติ ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The Pregnant Tree and the Goblin (2019) ได้ฉายที่เมืองปูซานและรอตเตอร์ดัม และได้รับรางวัล Terayama Shuji จากเทศกาล Image Forum
A graduate of the Korean Academy of Film Arts, Kim Dongryung is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Seoul. Her films on South Korea’s U.S. military camptowns have developed through close collaboration with women who lived and worked there, with each work finding its own form through observation, intervention, reenactment, and fiction. Her debut feature, American Alley (2008), received the Ogawa Shinsuke Prize at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Tour of Duty (2013) screened at MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight, Hot Docs, Ji.hlava IDFF, and Yamagata, where it received a Special Prize in the International Competition. The Pregnant Tree and the Goblin (2019) screened at Busan and Rotterdam and received the Terayama Shuji Prize at Image Forum Festival.
