NOMADE AUF ZEIT follows Valentin on a two-year journey from Austria eastward. Traveling without a fixed plan, he hitchhikes, sleeps on strangers’ sofas and under open skies, and encounters an extraordinary range of people and their stories. At the heart of the film, however, is his time with a nomadic family deep in the mountains of Iran. Through his empathetic approach, Valentin manages to portray their daily life with remarkable intimacy.

At first, communication is reduced to gestures, and Valentin approaches nomadic life through the lens of his own romanticized ideas. Yet despite the absence of a shared language, a deep bond gradually forms between him and the family, visible in moments that are playful, tender, and entirely unguarded. Through the shared experience of migration on foot, Valentin gains rare insight into a disappearing world. Today, only a handful of people in Iran still live a nomadic life, and with each generation the number shrinks further. The family exists in constant tension between centuries-old tradition and the growing pull of the modern world. Though he would gladly stay, Valentin is forced to leave Iran due to visa restrictions.

His journey continues across the Arabian Peninsula, but no matter what adventures follow, the encounter with the nomadic family never lets him go. Three months later, he returns, determined to find them again. This time, everything is different. Valentin travels with new Iranian friends, one of whom speaks the Qashqai language. For the first time, real conversation becomes possible. The long-awaited exchange begins, but unfolds in ways he never expected. In an intimate and honest dialogue, his romanticized vision of this life begins to unravel. The film ends not with answers, but with a shift in perspective.
