Set in the desolate Kazakh steppe, once a Soviet nuclear testing site, the film offers a stark and poetic warning for humanity’s future. Between 1949 and 1991, the Semipalatinsk Test Site was the location of 456 nuclear tests, leaving a legacy of radioactive contamination and human suffering. Today, over 1.5 million people are recognized as victims, and villages with more than 10,000 residents still exist just 30 to 60 kilometers from the site.
As two ecologists meticulously map radioactive areas unfit for habitation, a nearby family struggles with the lingering echoes of the past. Convinced their daughter’s illness stems from radiation, they seek proof so she can access vital medical treatment, dependent on her condition being officially linked to radiation exposure. Meanwhile, the girl feels torn between her deep love for the steppe and an ever-present sense of danger that hangs over them. Is this peril a remnant of the past or a threat looming from the future?
These personal struggles intertwine with the ecologists’ research, reflecting the enduring impact of nuclear testing across generations. The steppe becomes a poignant metaphor for our planet, where humanity’s choices teeter on the brink of irreversible consequences, a haunting reminder of what is at stake.

Zhanana Kurmasheva is a Kazakh director with a focus on documentary filmmaking. She holds a BA and MA in Film Directing from the Kazakh National Academy of Arts. Zhanana has participated in a number of international workshops and training programs, such as the East-West Talent Lab at the goEast – Festival of Central and Eastern European Film in 2022. Her debut feature-length documentary, We Live Here (2024), has been supported by the Berlinale Doc Toolbox Program, Eurasia Doc (Doc Monde) Script Development Residency, GZDOC (Top 10 Documentary Projects), and Tokyo Docs, where it won Best Pitch. She is the laureate of the Kulaguer-2011 award for her student documentary I Am 20 Years Old!. Her short documentary Zhenya (2013) was showcased at numerous international film festivals in Moscow, New York, Yerevan, Sevastopol, and Almaty, receiving acclaim for its nuanced storytelling. Her work reflects a profound engagement with social issues and cultural identity, establishing her as a rising voice in Kazakh documentary cinema.
