Maciek lives in a Polish village close to Belarus. It is winter 2021; the whole area has turned into a military zone, patrolled by border guards searching for “illegals” and pushing them back to Belarus. One day, Maciek’s mother lets an exhausted Syrian refugee into their house. Constructed like a thriller, this flawlessly executed film calls into question our definition of humanity. The tension is palpable in this sensitive, sharply observant documentary. Without a hint of sensationalism, the camera reads the emotions on the faces of the silent Polish family members and their grateful guest. The situation is dire, and a solution remains out of reach. Yet, at the same time, the film is permeated by the warmth of human help and contact.

Zvika Gregory Portnoy was born in the Soviet Union, though his birth certificate lists Ukraine, even though Ukraine did not exist as an independent country at the time. For the past 13 years, Zvika has lived and worked in Poland, having moved there for love after meeting his wife, Zuzanna. Together, they have become a successful creative partnership in both life and filmmaking. Their shared passion for travel, freedom, and collage-making brings a distinctive sensitivity to their work, which continues to evolve with each new project. Although they frequently alternate creative roles, their practice centers on directing, screenwriting, cinematography, and editing. The Guest is their first feature-length documentary to be co-directed by both filmmakers.

Zuzanna Solakiewicz grew up in a mountain lodge in Poland, which was managed by her parents. According to local tradition, the main entrance was always left open at night in case someone from the trail arrived seeking shelter. This sense of duty—to offer shelter to strangers simply because “they need it”—left a deep imprint on her consciousness. Zuzanna’s grandmother was born in Poland, but her birthplace was documented as the Soviet Union, as she was born in pre-war Lviv. Today, it would be recorded as Ukraine. Such historical complexities have taught her a sense of distance and empathy. The Guest is her first feature-length documentary to be co-directed with Zvika Gregory Portnoy.
