Drawing on close to a hundred excerpts from Iranian cinema, Mania Akbari revisits the representation of women from the silent era through the years surrounding the 1979 Revolution. Women dance, fall in love, run, drink and occupy the screen, yet their bodies and actions are repeatedly shaped by a cinematic language constructed through the male gaze.

Rather than treating these performers simply as victims, Akbari reclaims them as participants in cultural change. Her personal essay film moves through the contradictions of liberation, commodification, exploitation and suppression, confronting the patriarchal structures that have determined how women are seen and returning agency to bodies historically controlled by the image.

Mania Akbari (b. 1974) is an artist, curator and filmmaker working across cinema, visual art, autobiography and body politics. Her films investigate memory, sexuality, violence, illness, censorship and the social and cinematic construction of female bodies. Her major works include 20 Fingers, 10+4, Life May Be, A Moon for My Father and How Dare You Have Such a Rubbish Wish. In 2026 she co-directed Three Ways of Returning with Xiaolu Guo and Andrea Luka Zimmerman.
