Amarsanaa Battulga is a Mongolian film critic and programmer working across film festivals and criticism. He has served on juries at the Locarno Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, Golden Ger International Film Festival, Kharkhorum International Film Festival, and Beyond the Blue Sky International Queer Film Festival.

As a pre-selector and programmer, he has worked with Glasgow Shorts, True/False, Cambridge, BlackStar, Berlin NewGen, the Chinese Film Festival Hamburg, and the Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival. His writing has appeared in Die Welt, Cineuropa, photogénie, Documentary, and other publications, in English, Chinese, Mongolian, German, and Dutch.

He is a FIPRESCI member, a Berlinale Talent Press alumnus, and a voter for the 84th Annual Golden Globes (2027).

For WTD! 2026, we invited Amarsanaa to pick three films from this year’s programme that he thinks are worth discovering.

1. Xiangzidian Village: The Stage
   Hu Sanshou’s latest continues his sustained attention to his hometown, Xiangzidian Village, and the highway construction that would cut through it. The lives and relationships of his family, friends, and neighbours unfold through his softly whispered vernacular narration, revealing an extraordinarily intimate understanding of and care for his village and community.
2. Paper Houses and Horses
   While most hybrid films try to seamlessly conceal their staged elements, An Chu’s inventive short does the opposite by hiding its nonfiction component. A film that gives the audience a moment to reflect on what actually constitutes a documentary.
3. The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing
   Through images of wildflowers “from the river to the sea,” Theo Panagopoulos questions both the power and the dilemma of the act of witnessing. In this poignant short film, an archive is reclaimed, while our actions, or indeed our lack thereof, are quietly challenged.
